iPhone 13 Face ID could work with face masks and foggy glasses

Right when the confession of the face formed into a biometric security system de facto for smartphones, the world was beaten with a pandemic that requires people to wear masks most of the time. It wasted a lot of face recognition systems, including Apple’s advanced face ID. Instead of returning the fingerprint sensor to touch to the iPhone, apple uses a solution when working on a more permanent solution. The latter can be coming soon, maybe even on the iPhone 13, and will let the Face ID identify you even when your face is largely covered by a mask and misty glasses.

Like most facial recognition systems, id faces are designed to learn and recognize someone’s full face, with or without glasses. The face mask has messed up the system, and the glasses are fog because the mask is made worse. One improvement while Apple is to really use the apple watch to unlock the iPhone when the face ID fails, relying on accessories that are possessed by all iPhone owners.

Long-term solution, of course, is to improve the face ID to be able to “look through” the mask and glasses. Jon Proser from Font Page Tech Fame revealed exactly the solution tested among Apple employees. Apple seems to ask its workers to register their faces without a mask and then test the new face id system while wearing a mask to better improve the software for the scenario.

What makes the test a little more interesting is the case of the prototype used for that purpose. Because Apple requires data load, it has made a special case that can be used on the iPhone 12 to bypass the hardware of the default face of the cellphone. Interestingly, the sensor array used in the case resembles which is expected to be placed in the iPhone 13 slim notch.

According to Wood McGuire Appleosophy, this prototype is the same as what will be used on the iPhone 13 later this year. No new hardware or modification, and software updates may be needed for the face ID to finally work again, no matter what is on your face. The iPhone 13 is expected to debut in the second week of September, so we will soon find out if it will be a problem.
